What do I get when I secure disability benefits?

Disability benefits are functionally the same as retirement benefits. If you qualify, you’ll get free healthcare and a monthly check from the government — just as you would at your retirement age. The only thing that’s different is the reason why the government considers you unable to work: In this case, it’s because of a medical condition, rather than your age.

Who qualifies for disability benefits?

Anyone who is unable to work because of an illness or injury meets the medical qualifications for disability benefits. There are also “technical” eligibility requirements, which are different for each program. To qualify for SSDI, you’ll have to have worked most of your life. To qualify for SSI, you’ll have to have very little income.

How do I get disability benefits?

You’ll need to apply through the Social Security Administration: the government agency that manages the program.

Common misconceptions about applying

There is a lot of misinformation about disability out there. These are some of the most common ones we hear.

Hard situations our clients sometimes face

Some people face more barriers than others on the road to disability benefits. Here’s some advice that’ll set you up for success.

What happens after my intake?

Your client advocate and our lawyer network team will work together to connect you with an attorney who we think is an excellent fit for your case. You’ll hear from us regularly and often at the beginning as we make sure you are all set up with your new lawyer.

How does my account work?

You can sign into your account through our client portal for updates or information on your case.

Who can Atticus help?

We can help most people who are trying to apply for disability benefits or trying to appeal a denial for disability benefits. There are a few people who shouldn’t need our help that we still assist — and there are others who we unfortunately can’t help (yet).
