Can I apply if my behavior or activities actively contribute to my medical condition?

Updated over a week ago

Yes, you can still apply. But getting approved will be harder if the SSA thinks your activities contribute to your condition—for example, smoking if you have COPD or drinking with liver disease. If the SSA believes stopping would significantly improve your health, it can weaken your claim.

Taking steps to reduce or quit can support your health and strengthen your disability claim. Many lawyers prefer to work with clients who have already made changes, so it’s a good idea to start now if you can.
