Along with that monthly check and healthcare, most people get:

  • Survivors’ benefits that go to your family if you pass away

    • Your family members will get a lump sum payment of around $200.

    • Family members may get a percentage of your disability payments for the rest of their lives.

    • Family members may be able to use your eligibility to get disability benefits for themselves.

  • Eligibility for SNAP (food assistance) and other programs

    • It becomes much easier to apply for other benefits, including state-based programs.

  • Student loan forgiveness

    • If the government decides you are permanently disabled, they will erase all your federal loans.
