What kind of health insurance do I get?

You’ll get free health insurance from the government. If you’ve mostly worked throughout your life, you’ll get a type of insurance called Medicare (after a waiting period). If you haven’t worked recently and have very little income, you’ll get Medicaid (immediately).

What’s Medicare? How does it work?

Medicare is divided into several "parts" that each cover something different. Once approved, you are immediately eligible for some of those parts and can opt in to the others (like prescription drug coverage). Or, you can get Medicare Advantage, which is a personalized combination of different parts. Most people have to wait 24 months from the time they are deemed disabled before Medicare kicks in.

What’s Medicaid?

If you haven't worked and don't have a lot of money, you’ll be enrolled in a free government program: it generally covers hospital stays and medical treatment, but exactly what you get depends on the state you are in. It starts the calendar month after you are approved.
