If you had a lawyer at a previous hearing, you can choose to work with them again or get a different lawyer. If you’re appealing a denial, you should probably use the same attorney or ask them for help with next steps. If you are starting over or had a denial over 60 days ago, you can get a new lawyer.
Getting a new lawyer
To hire a new lawyer, you’ll first need to end your agreement with your current one. Write a letter to your lawyer saying you’re ending the contract, and send a copy to the Social Security Administration to update your record. A few weeks later, check in with the SSA to make sure your old lawyer was removed from your claim. This helps prevent delays and ensures a new lawyer can work on your claim.
