There are some people who we can’t help yet. But, that doesn’t mean you can’t apply on your own or seek a lawyer without our help.

SSI initials

We can’t help you with your initial application for the program based on your current finances (SSI). At this stage, your initial phone interview has a big impact on the success of your case — and lawyers can’t be on these phone calls. We have lots of resources on our website to help you apply. If you get denied, reach back out. Usually, you have 60 days to appeal — and at this point, a lawyer can make a real impact.

Your benefits were stopped, suspended, or terminated

We can’t help with cases where SSA thinks you overpaid or is canceling your benefits yet. If an attorney or representative helped you get approved initially, give them a call to see if they can help. You can also find resources through a local legal aid or try to find help through the National Organization of Social Security Claimant’s Representatives.

If you just had a hearing

If you very recently had a hearing and are trying to appeal it, you will very likely need a different type of attorney than we have at Atticus. If you recently had a hearing and you want to start over, we can only help if you have new diagnoses or your symptoms have gotten significantly worse.

You have a lawyer but want a new one (or haven’t heard from them in a while)

Before we can help, we will need to confirm that you do not have current representation. You can read more about what to consider before firing your lawyer
